Overview

TradeLens, a global logistics platform by IBM and Maersk, needed a new way to turn complex supply chain data into actionable insights. The existing reporting workflow required users to navigate through multiple filters, dashboards, and spreadsheets to locate critical shipment data.

The goal was to design an intuitive insights layer that would help users move from data exploration to data action – enabling quick access to real-time metrics and personalized reports without leaving the platform.

Challenge

TradeLens manages millions of data points daily across shipments, containers, and carriers. Users, ranging from logistics coordinators to senior supply chain managers, struggled to interpret this data efficiently. Each user had different priorities, but all needed a way to see what mattered most to their operations.

Our challenge was to design a flexible, role-based reporting experience that surfaced the right insights for each user type. The system needed to be powerful enough for enterprise analytics yet simple enough for day-to-day monitoring and decision-making.

Approach

Outcome

As Design Lead, I guided a small cross-functional team through research, design, and delivery.

Discovery sessions with global shipping partners revealed a need for a personalized workspace to surface critical metrics. We built a modular widget framework letting users build their own insights dashboard and a Query Builder for generating live reports directly from TradeLens data. Usability testing throughout refined the interface across multiple personas.

Outcome

The new Insights Reporting Tool became one of the platform’s most adopted features. It consolidated previously scattered reporting flows into one customizable dashboard, empowering users to view, edit, and export data directly from their workspace.

The Query Builder opened up self-service analytics capabilities for enterprise customers, significantly reducing support requests and time spent on manual report generation. The modular dashboard design became the foundation for additional analytics products across TradeLens.

Impact

• Reduced manual reporting time by over 40 percent.

• Exporting increase from 20% to 85% (unique users)

• 30% increase in daily retention.

• Time on site up 10%.

• Increased renewal rate (MOM).

• Increase in SUS from 64 to 72 within same user group.

• Increased user adoption and engagement across enterprise accounts.

• Established a scalable design pattern for future analytics tools

Improved decision-making speed and reduced data friction.
